Morit Elena Morit - Wake up Elena Wake up
2017

Director - Inga-Wiktoria Påve and Anders Sunna

Runtime: 5 min

A haunting tale that follows a young girl and her reindeer as they try to escape the menacing darkness of the colonial oppression in Sápmi. Guided by a spirit, she is reminded to listen to her inner voice and trust her instincts.

The movie Morit Elena Morit was created in association with the indigenous music and arts festival Riddu Riđđu, located in Manndalen, northern Norway. This festival hosts a mentorship program where they invite young Saami artists to collaborate with each other. In 2017 they invited Inga-Wiktoria Påve and Anders Sunna to make an artistic work which could be shown for the first time at their festival. Påve and Sunna are both from the Swedish side of Sápmi and are brought up in a traditional environment with reindeer herding. As part of this traditional living storytelling and the conflicts with the modern world are essential and vital for both their previous artistic works. They created this animated movie as to show how colonialization has sneaked upon the Saami people and also in a way to give other young Saami a shout out to wake up and rebuild and connect to the nature and the traditions.
